History of Recycling in Calgary
In 1991 the City of Calgary ran a pilot project where a select number of households
would receive weekly pick-up of their recyclables by placing these items in
a plastic bin and placing that bin at the curb. The city determined that, at
that time, it was not feasible for the city to provide this service to every
household but rather provide large green metal bins in various central locations
for individuals who wanted to recycle to bring their recyclables to those locations.
In 2004-2005 the city ran another pilot project this time focusing on biodegradable
waste, compost, but also picking up the same materials as they picked up during
the first pilot project. This pilot project ended in April 2005 and based on
the findings of the project the city may eventually offer a city-wide program
offering curbside recycling. At this point, the cost of offering such a service
would be too prohibitive to implement quickly, and it is likely that implementation
will take at last three years. The city has also indicated that it will utilize
existing private-sector infrastructure when the service is put in place.
Calgary Community Recycling is offering its services now. Our costs will be
comparable or lower than those that the city will add to your property taxes
once the program is implemented. Also, we recycle just about anything. From
paper, glass and metal items to plastics and household electronics, our priority
is making Calgary green now.
